Pioneer Creek The City of Maple Plain's website says that settlers James and Frank Maxwell, Asa Kelly, and Kelsey Hinman set out from Maxwell Bay on July 4th, 1854 to explore, and found a lake which they called Lake Independence. They also found a creek which they named Pioneer Creek. Along the creek they found rapids that later became a source of water power.
The creek starts on the Southwest shore of Lake Independence and heads West crossing Independence Road and then turns South. It crosses Pagenkopf Road and then cuts through the Northwest part of the City of Maple Plain and heads West again crossing County Road 90 and then State Highway 12. It heads Southwest crossing Pioneer Creek Road and then West again crossing County Road 92, and then Copeland Road. It turns South and crosses Pioneer Creek Golf Course and Watertown Road. After passing under an old railroad bridge on the Luce Line Trail, it then enters the North side of Ox Yoke Lake. This lake does outflow in the South Fork of the Crow River, but it flows through Deer Creek to get there. Armstrong About a mile West of downtown Maple Plain on State Highway 12 at County Road 90 is a place called Armstrong. Independence’s City Hall sits just North of this intersection. Maple Plain's West Main Street ends, to the South of this interscetion. It appears that the first school in Independence Township was in built in Armstrong in about 1858. The St. Paul, Pacific and Manitoba Railroad ran through Armstrong by about 1870. During the late 1800’s this settlement had a depot, a post office that later was move to Maple Plain, and a general store. "EXCELSIOR, organized May 11, 1858, "owes its name and settlement to a colony, under the title of the Excelsior Pioneer Association," which was formed in New York City, November 12, 1852. "They were headed by George M. Bertram and arrived in the summer of 1853." The colony adopted this name in allusion to Henry W. Longfellow's world-famous short poem, "Excelsior," which was written September 28, 1841, and was published a few days later." - from Minnesota Place Names French Creek runs from French Lake into Crystal Bay. It crosses under a bridge at Northshore Drive. The City of Orono has nearby on Old Crystal Bay Road, its French Creek Preserve. The preserve has a walking path the runs around what appears to be an old sewer plant holding pond. French Lake looks a lot like marsh. What I think happened in the past is they built a berm into the existing marsh to make the pond that was part of their sewage treatment plant. At this time, I do not believe there are any operating sewer plants around Lake Minnetonka.

Long Lake Creek flows from Long Lake to Lake Tanager, part of Lake Minnetonka. It flows out of Long Lake as seen here and then under Highway 12 about 800 feet West of Glenmoor Lane. It then flows under Orono Orchard Road. It runs to the intersection of Brown Road and the Luce Line Trail. It then runs parallel to Brown for awhile and then crosses back near Fox Street seen below. It soon widens and crosses under the Dakota Rail Trail. This bridge can be seen from Country Road 15 by looking across Lake Tanager. Local Zip Codes
